Have you ever had to face the biggest dilemma of your life? "I was born on Chinese New Year. Carefully, my parents chose my name: Ji-li, meaning lucky and beautiful. They hoped that I would be the happiest girl in the world" (Prologue, pg.1) Twelve-year-old Ji-li Jiang had a bright future until later that year the Cultural Revolution came. Then her world starts to shatter. Years pass, she gets humiliated by neighbors, friends and finally faces the most difficult dilemma of her life.
I personally think that the main character JI-Li Jiang (author) struggles a lot for victory. By the end I was happy that after her hard work she triumphed. I read the book by planning it out day by day. It was a quick read. I felt very bad at times when her father was detained and when they wrote the da-zi-bao about her. The Red Guards searched people's homes, as they do the Jiangs. They live in fear for a long time. I recommend that people ages 12-15 of any gender (genre: autobiography) would enjoy this book. Ji-li Jiang now lives in the San Francisco Bay area, which she considers home. She believes that a better understanding among people around the world is the only route to global peace. Red Scarf Girl makes you to want to keep reading. It’s a good book that tells about all her difficulties.

Great book!

When I picked this up I expected something rather dry. I didn't expect it to be a book written with children in mind. This works brilliantly. The author is recounting her life between ages 12-14 for children on either side of that range. That makes this book accessible, interesting, and easy to read. I really got a good feel for what went on during the Cultural Revolution without feeling junk rammed down my throat. I wish I had read this book as a child, and I'm glad I read it now. Definitely one for our personal library.
