There is a reason why it is a Ghastly Award Winner!

Oh you stupid man Dan! How can you go so long and still not be caught up with this AMAZING series! Sadly folks I am behind and reading this one in trade form, but I have to tell you, I think it is something that you can't pass up any longer. The artwork in this series is just GORE-Geous, surprisingly minus the gore. This trade takes place in the grand city of New Orleans, as we catch up with the crew as they try to understand more about the guns. Hurtt does a fantastic job of capturing the Crescent City and surroundings. The swamps are spooky, the graveyards are grotesque and the man draws a damn fine alligator. I have a soft spot for alligators in comics. The story itself has many intense moments followed up by some great slow points. Bunn has such an ear for the dialogue, nothing seems out-of-place. This book is just so damn addicting. I can not wait for the day I see this translated to the big/small screen, and I know it will happen. Mixing supernatural and western elements has been done before but not on this level. When I get caught up on the trades, I will be going back and getting the single issues. This is easily one of the best books on the shelves right now. I honestly can't see who it wouldn't appeal to.

More of the same, but delightful nonetheless

Scattered across the Old West are six magical guns. Each has a mystical power and is bound to its owner for life, unwilling to fire for another. The Sixth Gun follows Drake, an former villain on a quest to find the guns before people who're even worse do. He inadvertently teams up with Clarissa, daughter of a man who was guarding one of the six to hide it from the malevolent forces that are coming for them.
Vol 2 finds Drake seeking mystics who can tell him how to destroy the guns. Clarissa has come along for the ride, but there's animosity between them and she's got her own ideas about how to proceed. Plus, it seems to be the first time she's off the farm and she's finding her way as an adult. There's an obligatory visit to the swamps of New Orleans, and a giant crocodile. Plus, we get the first glimpses of the larger story and menace facing the characters and, perhaps, the whole world.
We can only hope that the comic won't devolve into a formula in the following volumes.

The Sixth Gun, Vol. 2: Crossroads

The Sixth Gun, Vol. 2: Crossroads is just as action filled as the first volume. Drake and Becky have travelled to New Orleans. There are a lot of tensions between them and they get into a fight. Drake leaves becky at the saloon they are staying to find a guy called Henri Fournier, to help him with the guns, that lives at a crossroad out in the swamps. Becky meets in the saloon a gunfighter called Kirby Hale that tries his best to charm her. And then...well you have to read it yourself to find out...
This was a great volume; the only part that bothered me was Becky and Kirby Hale. First guy that shows some interest in her and she throws herself at his feet? After all that she's been through she just decided to tell him everything about the guns, after she just met him? I put it down to her still being naïve, but it was still annoying. I hope she has learned her lesson now.
