Tells It Like It Was
By Francie Nolan
I really dig what the author is saying. She tells it like it was--how she and others were treated by those implementing U.S. government policy (abominably) as well as incidents like her and her friends "liberating" items from stores.
Man's inhumanity to man always slays me. Though it's been happening from the beginning of time, I always find it incredible.
I found the first half of the book more interesting than the second half. The paragraphs eventually became too long for me and not as interesting. It felt more like an obligatory detailing of the facts than an impassioned narrative of the experiences of AIM, etc.
Though I found myself skimming portions of the second half, I still recommend this book.

Great historical record
By Rebecca R
I remember the 1973 Wounded Knee stand, but never knew the real details. I am grateful that Mary Crow Dog wrote her account of this defining time. I have always felt a certain sadness of Anna May Aquash's life and murder, so Mary Crow Dog's remembrance of her friend was poignant indeed. Life is short and precious, it is difficult to believe that Mary Crow Dog has passed and her life and time is now part of the great Lakota Sioux Nation's turbulent history. Invaluable historical record written by a woman who was there.

This was actually a very heart breaking story.
By Pam
This book brought to life the story of the American Indian for me. I didn't know too much about wounded knee and other things before reading this book. The things that they have suffered is heartbreaking. My heart hurts for the children that were forced to go to the missionary schools and that the truth of a loving mighty God was not taught by the people who ran the schools.Instead they once again turn to horrifying self mutilation rituals such as the sun dance to obtain help from the supernatural that in the end has never and will never make their life better. I pray that these good people would find out that Jesus is more powerful than any other god and that He is a very present help in the time of trouble.
